Responsive Web Design — freeCodeCamp

freeCodeCamp rebuilt this certification in 2022 and the redesign fixed the thing everyone complained about: the old version taught concepts in isolation, and the new one teaches by having you build roughly twenty small projects, one brick at a time. You write real HTML and CSS from a blank editor rather than filling gaps in someone else's file.

Semantic HTML, forms, accessibility, Flexbox, responsive design and CSS Grid are the core topics. Five certification projects are the actual requirement — the rest of the coursework is optional practice, so you can skip ahead if you already know the material and just pass the test suites.

How the projects work

Each project drops you into an empty editor with a test suite you have to make pass. That structure is the reason this certification is worth more than a video course: there's no way to fake it. You either got the grid to behave or you didn't, and the failing test tells you which requirement you missed. The repetition across the practice projects is deliberate — you build a survey form, then a tribute page, then a documentation page, and the same patterns keep coming back until they're automatic.

Where it drags

The repetition that makes it effective also makes it long. Working through every practice project is a serious time commitment for material that plateaus fairly early, and a lot of people burn out in the middle third where the projects start feeling samey. Accessibility is covered but lightly — you'll learn to use semantic elements and alt text without getting a real grounding in ARIA or screen reader behaviour. And there's no JavaScript here at all, so nothing you build interacts.

Who it's for

Complete beginners to web development who want a free certificate they can actually point at, and anyone whose CSS is self-taught and full of holes — the Flexbox and Grid sections in particular are better than most paid equivalents. Skip the practice projects if you already write CSS confidently and go straight to the five certification builds. Skip the certification altogether if you want a design education; this teaches layout mechanics, not visual judgement.

Our take

The best free structured start in web development, and genuinely long. The tests are the feature and the tedium is the price. One honest limitation: passing test suites teaches you to satisfy requirements rather than to make something look good, and a portfolio of five freeCodeCamp certification projects looks identical to everyone else's. Do the course, then build something nobody assigned you.
